50MW Grid-Connected PV Power Station Project, Haixi Prefecture, Qinghai

Project Background

The project is located on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau at an altitude of over 3000 meters, where the natural environment is extremely harsh: intense ultraviolet (UV) radiation (accelerating material aging), extreme day-night temperature differences (up to over 30°C, causing frequent thermal expansion and contraction of materials), extreme low temperatures in winter (down to -35°C), and heavy sandstorms. This poses an unprecedented reliability challenge to every component in the photovoltaic (PV) system, especially the exposed electrical connection points.
The project fully adopts UV-resistant and low-temperature resistant enhanced MC4 connectors that have passed rigorous environmental certification. Their housings are made of engineering plastics with special formulations, and may adopt a double-layer sealing ring design.

Specific Applications & Value Demonstration

1. Resistance to Extreme Climates:

UV Resistance: Special materials ensure the connector housing does not chalk or become brittle under intense plateau UV radiation, maintaining elasticity and sealing performance for over 25 years.

Wide Temperature Tolerance: Internal metal terminals and elastic seals maintain performance in an extreme temperature range of -40°C to +120°C, avoiding poor contact or seal failure caused by low-temperature brittleness or high-temperature softening.

Sandstorm Resistance: The tight IP68 protection rating effectively prevents fine sand and dust from entering the connector interior, avoiding increased contact resistance or short circuits caused by friction.

2. Ensuring Large-Scale Deployment Efficiency:

Thousands of strings need to be connected across the vast Gobi Desert. The "click" type quick-connection of MC4 enables the installation team to efficiently complete electrical wiring even during narrow windows of good weather in harsh conditions, significantly shortening the construction period.

3. Safety & Maintainability:

The power station is located in a remote area with high maintenance costs. The modular design of MC4 makes troubleshooting and replacement of any single string simple and fast—maintenance personnel can operate on-site with dedicated tools, no welding or special treatment required, greatly reducing O&M difficulty and costs throughout the full life cycle.

Project Achievements

  • Three years after the power station was connected to the grid and put into operation, a comprehensive inspection showed that none of the MC4 connection points had failed, cracked, or experienced performance degradation due to environmental factors. The failure rate on the DC side was far lower than the industry average, which verifies the excellent durability of MC4 connectors in extreme environments.
